Common questions
How long does a name change take?
Once filed, Companies House usually registers the change within a few working days. The name is not legally changed until they do.
Does my company number change?
No. The company number stays the same for the life of the company — only the name changes.
Do I need to tell anyone else?
Yes. HMRC, your bank, your insurers and your customers all need telling, and your stationery and website must be updated to show the new name.
Can I choose any name?
It must not be the same as, or too similar to, an existing registered name, and sensitive words need approval. We check before filing.
