When you must register, and when you might choose to
Turnover above £90,000
Registration is compulsory if your taxable turnover for the past 12 months exceeds £90,000.
Overseas sellers into the UK
If you are based outside the UK, selling goods to UK customers and importing them into the UK, you must register.
Goods stored in the EU
If you are overseas with goods stored in the EU and sales to Northern Ireland customers exceed £90,000 a year, you must register.
Voluntary — to reclaim VAT
Below the threshold you can still register voluntarily to reclaim VAT on business expenses.
Voluntary — for a scheme
Turnover below £150,000 qualifies for the Flat Rate Scheme; £1.35 million or less qualifies for Annual or Cash Accounting.
Common questions
How long does it take to get a VAT number?
It varies. Errors or missing information cause HMRC to request corrections, which slows things down, and busy periods such as the end of the tax year extend waiting times. An accurate, complete application is the best way to avoid delays.
What information do I need to provide?
Your full name, date of birth, National Insurance number, photo ID, your UTR, bank account details, and information about turnover and business activities. Limited companies also need the Company Registration Number and Corporation Tax UTR.
How do I avoid becoming VAT registered?
The only legitimate way is keeping taxable turnover below £90,000 a year. You cannot split a business into separate entities to stay under — HMRC treats closely related businesses as one, and attempting it can bring severe fines and, in serious cases, imprisonment.
Can I register by post?
Yes, on form VAT1, but online is faster. Delays happen through application errors, HMRC volumes, or additional fraud checks, which can push processing beyond 30 working days.
